Being it was our first trip to Cozumel, we didn't know what to expect at all in terms of what the island would be like, or the lodging, or the sights. Park Royal (with Royal Holiday) took care of all of that! From the moment you land, you can get a cab to the resort (about a 15 minute ride, if that). When you enter, you are greeted warmly with friendly faces who can speak both English and Spanish, along with a yummy welcome fruit punch.
Park Royal is all inclusive, which makes it even easier on you and your family. In that package, you get many food options with their La Veranda Buffet restaurant, the Snack bars, and then the reservation and dinner only Italian and Mexican restaurants. All options are great food quality, with the exception of the snack bars. There is a 3 1/2 window every afternoon where the only place you can get food is the snack bar, which serves pizza slices, hamburgers, hot dogs, and nachos. That food was cafeteria grade at best, but I think when you are hungry in the afternoon, it does the trick.
And where there is free food, there are also free drinks :) They have 2 swim up bars, a sports bar open until 2am, and bars around the resort. I would suggest their pina coladas-they were my fave all weekend!
For entertainment, there are several options per day. There is a large white board with times of activities going on through out the day. While we were there, there was a disco night, casino night, water balloon volleyball, and even shows with professional dancers and more. The staff go out of their way to invite and include you in these activities, which I think is very nice. You can relax or have as much fun as you want to!
There are 3 gorgeous pools to choose from. There is one in the middle of the resort, with lush greenery and trees all around and it has a lazy river. There is even a DJ playing music! The other pools are right on the coast line, the infinity pools. One is more kid-friendly with a shallow pool. The other one was the "party" pool with non-stop fun! All 3 pools feature a swim up bar with stools in the water.
For the parents, there is a kid's club program, offering supervision to your children in a gated area that includes a pool, water slide and such. Even on rainy days, they have games set up for the kids indoors. This wonderful feature is for kids ages 4 and up and is offered from 9am-5pm every day. All inclusive!!!
Now there are some features that are not included in your all inclusive package: spa and fitness center, motorized water sports, travel agency, laundry and valet, and medical services. There is also a "convenience store" on the premises where you can purchase anything you may have forgotten, medicine, drinks and snacks, etc.
There are some qualities that stood out to me about this resort. First and foremost would be the cleanliness. This place was CLEAN. This resort is only a couple years old,and they have kept it in immaculate shape. There are staff members cleaning areas at all times of day and night.
The staff was friendly and made our stay very enjoyable. Every staff member you passed or came in contact with would greet you warmly and help you with anything you would need. This is so important to me personally, and I would give Park Royal an A+!
I loved the rooms! Very chic yet simple and clean decor. When you would leave for the day, maid service will leave you fresh fruit in the room while doing the usual services. If you are out for the evening, they come back and leave a dessert in your room for you as well.
We did run out of hot water, and then water all-together for a day. When we called maintenance, the language barrier made it a little difficult to communicate, but it got done. The hot water stopped working for that building, but they worked very hard to fix it in a reasonable amount of time. And honestly, it wasn't a big deal! We would just spend the day out swimming, or snorkeling, or eating! haha.
Even though we did this first trip without our children, this is somewhere I would definitely take my entire family. There was plenty for them to do! And the nice part is that this resort is featured on the part of the island that is calm (no waves). So even the beach portion is perfect for little ones to have the gradual walk out and the sand to play with.
Some things you can do with your family on the island: shop and eat in the downtown area (all places on the island accept pesos and US dollars!), visit ancient Mayan ruins, drive around the island and visit the different beaches, snorkeling, Chankanaab park (where you can swim with dolphins and explore the rain forest), island tours, sunset cruises, golf, and scuba diving.
Cozumel is beautiful and safe. It is more quaint and rustic in comparison with Cancun and places like that. It was hard to leave paradise! I am so grateful to have had this experience!!! I hope you check our Cozumel and highly suggest you stay at Park Royal!
